Lady GaGa has done it again, adding another addition to her masterpiece collection of songs. I was reading reviews on iTunes today and I saw that a few people think she is imitating Madonna. I do see similarities in this song with things Madonna has done in that past, but if we look at any other genre of music you will see similarities in them too. People can be REALLY SMART sometimes. The first time I heard this song was when she performed it at the Grammy’s. I was not too impressed with it then (look at my Grammy Post) but after making the purchase of the song, I have come to love it. I probably look like I am having a seizure because it just makes me want to move my body, and I don’t dance. When I dance I look like furniture moving around in an earthquake. I can hardly wait until the entire CD is out, only 3 months until we can hear the entire album “Born This Way.” Then I will play the music so loud, I might cause an earthquake… or avalanche.
Although this song has a good beat that you want to dance to, it has some good lyrics too. The parts I want to point out are as follows: “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen. Whether you’re broke or evergreen, you’re black, white, beige, chola decent; you’re Lebanese, your orient. Weather life’s disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased. Rejoice and love yourself today ‘cause baby you were born this way.” There is a reference to gays like it is a race (although sometimes we treat them like a race). I thought that was funny. But the entire point of this song is for someone to become comfortable in your own skin. There are too many people pretending to be someone they are not (Ke$ha). I was watching the ‘60 Minutes’ interview with Lady GaGa before the Grammy’s and she is a lot more normal than people want to believe. She talked a little bit about her high school years and how many of the girls in her school would make fun of her (I can relate). Some people would say, “Well, that is not hard to do, she is easy to make fun of.” But I want you to think about it, she is comfortable with who she is now. And now that she can see that, she wants her fans to be as comfortable as she is, just being themselves.
Another thing I found cool about the interview is she explained the reasoning to wearing artwork as clothing. She knows the story behind the idea of each article of clothing she wears. Being a photographer I understand when she says, “Everything has a story.” Most of the photo shoots I do with people have to have a storyline otherwise the pictures don’t come out right. Not like I am writing stories with every photo shoot I do, but you need a storyline or theme. All that stems from an idea, I am sure it is the same way with all the things she wears. (And she wears these things to grab attention). If I wore things to grab people’s attention, I would not have been as creative as her. I would have worn something like trash bags full of garbage (think Zoolander). So you can see that she is a far more creative than me; she grabs the audience’s attention and they remain focused on her waiting to see what she will do next. I was absent from society for a while so I did not know who she was at all for a long time. I did see her picture everywhere, and I thought she was kind of creepy. I mean look at the cover of “The Fame Monster” she is crying oil or tar. But now that I have seen interviews with her, I understand her a little bit more, I believe she is brilliant! I think people need to stop criticizing her so much. If you would take the time to understand her, you will stop making her the butt end of your jokes. I understand she is an easy person to make fun of, but stop criticizing so harshly. (I know I am The Bitter Critic, but at least know something before you criticize) Lady GaGa is a marvelous artist (in music, sculpture, photography, and dance. She is multi-talented). Although she is not my role model, she is an inspiration for me to give up all my insecurities and to stop caring about what other people think. So when you listen to “Born This Way” think of it as an inspirational speech with a good beat. Just become comfortable with who you are.
I guess I am not the only person who loves Lady GaGa, my good friend Glozell does too. Enjoy this video, I had a good laugh.
